Purpose, recovery and small steps
Ryan Kilbride · 22 June 2026
A lot of recovery talk leans heavily on "find your purpose." For people in the middle of burnout, addiction recovery, or ADHD overwhelm, that question can feel paralysing.
Purpose is smaller than you think
You don't need a calling. You need the next honest, doable thing. A walk. A phone call you've been avoiding. Cooking one proper meal. Putting the laundry away. These aren't beneath you — they're the building blocks of a life that holds together.
The rhythm that works
- One small responsibility, daily. Not a list. One thing. Done.
- One contact, daily. A text, a coffee, a meeting. Isolation makes everything heavier.
- One reflection, daily. Two minutes. What worked? What's the next small thing?
Purpose grows out of repeated small actions, not the other way around. Start where you are. The bigger picture catches up.
